Before the Civil War, there was a legend of a giant snake that lived in the rocky formation in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
The snake was rumored to be abdormally large and earned the nickname of “the Devil.” This area became known as the Devil’s Den. Later, it became a significant site in the battles of Gettyburg during the Civil War.
But the snake was there first.
