In the late 1800s, the Spiritualism Movment was at its height in popularity, and many upper class ladies enjoyed communication with ghosts.
After the death of her son, Mary Todd Lincoln hosted numerous seances in the White House to communicate with her children from beyond the grave. Influenced by the popular Spiritualism Movement, she believed her sons visited her nightly.
Methods for communication at the time invluded candles, holding hands in a circle, and seeking the advice and guidance of a spiritual medium. Later, the Ouija board became a popular tool for communication with the dead.
